E-FOR: Education for Remembrance (2009 – 2010)

1. March 2009.

Co-funded by European Union, Europe for Citizens Programme

Project leader: Association of Local Democracy Agencies (France)

Project partners: Local Democracy Agency Sisak (Croatia), Jasenovac Memorial Site (Croatia), Memorial of Caen (France), Municipality of Nardò (Italy), The Junction (UK) and Institute for National History (Macedonia)

Project is based on a multi-faceted approach to education for remembrance, with a double aim: to embed it in education to human rights and active European citizenship and to maintain and increase its relevance for a future when no survivors of events happened during the Second World War will be left. Under such circumstances it is also important to raise awareness on ‘minor’ memorial sites, to connect them to the wider picture of Nazi-fascist mass murdering in Europe, in order to give to young people a strong, locally radicated notions of such events. The project will feature a seminar in Jasenovac, the organization of events at the local level and the production of an educational booklet.

Project objectives:

· To gather practitioners in education and memorial sites conservation to produce a creative and innovative ‘educational unit’ for remembrance education, in the spirit and within the framework of the European Year for creativity and innovation 2009

· To build capacity for partners to organize events at the local level

· To build a network to share opportunities and resources for relevant stakeholders in education and memorial sites conservation

· To generate a widespread debate across Europe on education for remembrance, human rights and solidarity

· To raise awareness on ‘minor’ memorial sites and ensure they have the possibility to partner and apply for funding for projects connected to remembrance and historical memory education.

Project activities:

· A meeting in Jasenovac with experts in the field of education to develop an ‘educational unit’ on remembrance, Europe and active citizenship to develop working networks and elaborate new strategies for remembrance education in connection to the themes of active citizenship.

· Local events organized by partners according to the proposal developed during the meeting in Jasenovac.

· Production of educational booklet on remembrance and active European citizenship, setting up of a website on the project experience.
