Project summary:
Local Democracy Agency Sisak and partners, aim to systematize the long-term practice and efforts of the LDA Sisak and educational institutions in the Sisak-Moslavina County (SMC) for the development of school volunteer clubs through the establishment of the Platform for development of school volunteering, as a place of education, exchange and advocacy towards the decision makers. Research conducted among teachers and students in SMC highlighted the insufficient representation of civic activism and interculturalism topics and the fact that young people involved in any form of volunteering activities have better understanding and higher engagement both in a class and in a society.
The project aims to create a precondition for the systematic support to schools in SMC by strengthening their capacities for development and implementation of practical and engaging contents on topics such as active citizenship, social justice and social inclusion. The platform consists of schools in which volunteer clubs exist and those schools that are interested in developing this type of extracurricular activities. The backbone of the work of school volunteer clubs is collaborative (co-creative) work of teachers and students in detecting the needs and problems of the community, finding the best solutions, and implementing concrete actions. The volunteer club will be developed at the Vocational School Sisak in which the innovative methods and approaches designed through the Platform will be tested. The development of active youth citizenship is necessary for the development of civil, social, and economic cohesion and the strengthening of civic awareness in the county burdened by years of neglect and recent crises (earthquake, pandemic).
Partner Human Rights House contributes to the project by conducting educations and research of good practices and the needs of teachers and students for the practical education on civic education. Vocational School Sisak is a training ground for development of the volunteers’ club working on social justice topics. Norsensus Mediaforum participates by conveying Norwegian good practices on school volunteering and public-civil partnership and by supporting the Platform work.
