Within the project “Follow My Steps! – Youth for a Sustainable Community” lead by Local Democracy Agency Sisak on from 23 to 24 October 2019, the first in a series of Workshops for students called “Being a Volunteer” was held in partner High School Ivan Trnski Hrvatska Kostajnica.
The workshop was led by volunteer coordinators from the Local Democracy Agency Sisak, and in two days involved 43 students from different clases. In this way, students learned the basic concepts of volunteering and were introduced to the benefits of volunteering for their personal development and gained insight that they themselves can make changes. Through group work, they made their own posters through which they expressed their opinions and views on the motivations and benefits of volunteering. This basic knowledge will help students continue their active participation in the school volunteer club through which they will plan and conduct volunteer actions and peer workshops themselves. Most of the students who have not had experience in volunteering so far have been motivated by the workshop to participate in volunteering. “I learned that volunteering is no joke!” – one of the workshop participants confirmed. “Volunteering is important in order to help others and also to achieve personal satisfaction.” – is another interesting conclusion. We are sure that students have realized how complex the volunteering area is and that with their rights we all have obligations in the whole process of involvement and participation in volunteering.
The next two workshops will be held in Sisak Gymnasium, which will include students from 1st to 4th grade. In parallel with the implementation of the partner schools’ workshops, they also conduct a needs analysis of the types of volunteer programs in the schools and will maintain focus groups through which we will have an insight into the needs of the school community for the purpose of developing volunteer programs.
The project “Follow My Steps! – Youth for a Sustainable Community” is Co-financed by the Office for NGOs of the Government of the Republic of Croatia through the Swiss-Croatian Cooperation Program. The leader of the project is the Local Democracy Agency Sisak, and the partners are Sisak Gymnasium High School, High School Ivan Trnski Hrvatska Kostajnica and Sisak-Moslavina County. The aim of the project is to contribute to the promotion of partnership between civil society organizations and educational institutions in the field of volunteerism, which contributes to social and economic cohesion and sustainable development in the Sisak – Moslavina County.
